Editing Short-Form Travel & Food Stories for YouTube
I recently worked with Andrew Fraser on a series of YouTube Shorts for his docu-vlog channel which explores off-beat travel, unexpected food and everyday moments that feel a little surreal.
In total I edited 21 Shorts, all pulled from longer-form footage and reshaped for vertical viewing. The goal wasn’t to overproduce anything, but to keep the edits quick, clear and human. These videos live or die in the first second or two, so pacing, timing and knowing when not to cut were key.
One of the Shorts I edited became the channel’s most-viewed short to date, which was a nice bonus, but the real fun was in the process. I used newer Adobe Premiere features like auto transcription to speed up selects and structure and paired that with Descript for captions that have the karaoke look without slowing the workflow down.
Projects like this are a good reminder that short-form doesn’t mean shallow. Even in 30–60 seconds, there’s room for tone, context and story if you’re careful with the edit.
If you’re working in travel, food or documentary-style content and want Shorts that feel natural instead of forced, this is exactly the kind of work I enjoy.
